Don't give a first fishing kit for Christmas

Winter fishing can be first class but it's not easy. The proud owner of a new fishing rod will naturally want to try it out at once. The right combination of weather and water conditions for a novice to catch are rare in a British winter. If it's too late and you're reading this because a well-meaning relative gave your child a poorly thought out present then I have included a few suggestions in Advice for Parents of Young Anglers

The best time to start a child fishing is:

• in the sea, May to October.
• in Freshwater, Mid June to October.

Depending on how well the first few sessions went you might continue through the winter or pause until the spring.

Repetition

If the first session goes well plan to repeat it several times in short succession. Two or three trips in a weekend break or a few more in a half-term holiday will reinforce the experience and move your child quickly through the stages where continual adult help is needed.
