Gold-Ribbed Crab's Ear - The small early season version.
This is a good night-lure in the early part of the summer, by the end of August the survivng fry are growing too big to imitate with this pattern. Leaded versions are useful in deeper spots even in daylight.
Tying:
- Hook
- Sizes 10 to 2/0 are most useful but it can be any size. Lead can be used to make an 'upside-down' version less liable to snagging.
- Thread
- Anything strong
- Tail
- White goat or other mobile hair, extending about half a hooklength past the bend. A shorter flourescent red tail may be useful on occasion, usually early in the season.
- Body
- Silver mylar tubing, well varnished.
- Ribbing
- Gold mylar wound over wet varnish.
- Beard
- Optional flourescent red floss.
- Wing
- White hair, bucktail on weighted versions, goat if unleaded.
- Head
- Optional peacock herl varnished over.

A larger example used during August/September.
